After responsive sites: customising the web experience

“Step one of improving your site is to ensure it’s fully responsive. Most websites have now embraced that and offer a decent user experience on all screen sizes. But the best experiences come from sites that are pushing forward beyond just responsiveness.

Intelligently utilising your analytics, producing visitor profiles, and customizing your site with testing tools based upon the devices being used, is how you really provide a great experience. Visitors use different devices to carry out different actions on websites. As an example, generally, people will use their mobile device to quickly look at something specific or to find a piece of information, tablet users will browse and read more content, while desktop users will do this but will also do things like download files.

If you can identify what people are doing on your site on the varying devices, you can go a long way to producing a site that really works for the visitor. For each tailored landing page you can promote more relevant content and hide, or even remove, non-relevant things. An example of this could be that if a visitor comes to your site on a mobile you make the address and contact information easy to see, but remove the likes of file downloads and any other things that just aren’t going to be done a mobile device.”
