Best practices for Google Analytics dashboards

Sanna is our resident dashboard wiz – she can create a great dashboard in Google Analytics or SiteCatalyst faster than you can say “Google Analytics and SiteCatalyst” (well, nearly!). So today she’s here to talk about a few best practices when creating dashboards in GA.

“The detail and complexity of a dashboard can vary wildly, normally depending upon the audience. But there are some basic tips which can be handy when creating any dashboard in Google Analytics.

A dashboard is always going to be a summary view of what’s happening with the site, so create it based upon the key and important information and targets that are most relevant to the audience. Ensure you look at the audiences’ key KPIs and base your widgets on these.

The report widgets you see on a dashboard can act as a bookmark to a more detailed view. Provide the key information and the end user can then click-through to the main report page to view more detail and to tweak the report according to any additional information they may need at that time.

You can schedule report information from the dashboard to be emailed out to other people (from the ‘email’ option at the top of the main dashboard view) – these could be colleagues or clients. Set the dashboard up with the key information, set up your schedule and contacts, and then you can sit back and continue to watch the reporting in real-time.
