Google Analytics integration for Screaming Frog

Screaming Frog is a favourite tool of most SEO people, including our own Vivek. He’s going to give us some more information on an update that happened over the summer – Screaming Frog SEO Spider 4.0.

“July’s 4.0 update (and subsequent v4.1) to Screaming Frog had a couple of big new features, such as custom extraction, and a multitude of bug fixes and updates. But there was also Google Analytics integration.

By connecting to the GA API, you can now pull data directly during a crawl. This will allow you to have a better understanding of the organic performance of the site, and will allow you to more easily identify things such as high bounce rates on specific pages and possible reasons for this.

The feature will not only produce your standard user and session metrics, but also goal conversions and ecommerce data, as well as AdWords data if you have any campaigns running at that time.

In order to set this up, you’ll need to start the SEO Spider and go to Configuration > API Access > Google Analytics. Here you can connect to the relevant Google account and grant the necessary permissions, and you’re then good to go. You can subsequently select the required Analytics account, property, view, segment and date range (if required).

You can select up to 20 metrics from within the tool to pull from GA, but Screaming Frog recommend that you keep this to 10 or below if possible as this will help to aid performance and speed. It’s also possible to add dimensions, but, again, the more you add, the more you will hinder the speed of the crawl.

More detailed feature-sets and setup information can be found on the Screaming Frog website”.
