If you’re about to undergo a site migration and want to keep your back-links and their value, Vivek may have some invaluable advice for you.

A problem I see regularly is sites losing their back-links and the associated value once they’ve performed a site migration.

As part of any migration you should make sure that any pages that are back-linked are redirected to your new site. If you don’t apply proper redirects you will loseall of the back-link value that you have built up.

You should apply a HTTP response code 301 to all applicable pages. The 301 code advises of a permanent URL redirection. This will ensure that any back-links that are clicked will direct to the new page and you will also maintain the value of those back-links.”
