A rag called The Crusader – the so called “Political Voice of White Christian America” start off their article with the Trump slogan…. Let’s make America great again.

Then they say “but what made America Great in the first place?” and answer their own question by saying “America was great not because of what our forefathers did – but because of who our forefathers were. America was founded as a white Christian Republic.”

In the 1920s Adolf Hitler said in point 4 of his 25 point program of the Nazi party “Only a member of the race can be a citizen. A member of the race can only be one who is of German blood, without consideration of creed. Consequently, no Jew can be a member of the race”.

Hate

In both cases we’re talking about people who hate other people because of who they are and where they came from.

Hitler said in the 1920s that you couldn’t be a citizen if you were a Jew. He didn’t say if you’re a Jew, you and millions like you would be humiliated, tortured and eventually murdered.

In World War 2 he went one step further than saying you couldn’t be a citizen. He eliminated millions of them.

Now I am not saying Donald Trump is going to eliminate millions of people in a systematic brutal way like Hitler did. My point is he’s starting off saying similar things with similar fear mongering tactics, playing on patriotism (make America Great again) and with similar language.

During the Nuremberg trials over 70 years ago Hermann Goering said;

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

Let me just spell out a few of the statements Trump has made regards fear.

  • On Mexican immigrants: ‘They’re bringing drugs,’ crime and are ‘rapists’
  • On 9/11: ‘You’re going to have more World Trade Centers. It’s going to get worse and worse, folks’
  • On Islam: ‘I think Islam hates us’

Trump is using the exact same tactics that the Nazis used in the 20s and 30s before they came to power. He is stirring up nationalist fears.

But that isn’t what disturbs me.

Trump trend in Finland

Generally speaking this Google trends image reflects the growth in interest for the keywords Donald Trump over the past few months in Finland.

This is similar for the rest of the world too so I don’t read too much into this, nor do I read too much into the regions (although why no-one in Kainuu has any interest is slightly odd).

What disturbs me is the growth in media coverage this xenophobic, racist, sexist bigot has managed to achieve in such a short space of time and how much damage he has managed to create.

Its a Global Trend

What’s happening in the USA is symptomatic of what’s happening globally. You have the True Finns (a Finnish nationalist party) that won far more than people expected at the last election in Finland. In the UK you had the Brexit and UKIP winning more and more seats. Similarly you have the Swiss people’s party who received nearly 30% of this Octobers general election result. Nationalism seems to be growing in every country.

I believe what we’re seeing is a symptom of the globalisation of communication. If we think back to when we’ve seen this before, its been when humans are in the middle of a change process that they naturally rebel against, the narrow minded view of “they come over here, take our women, take our jobs” syndrome.

This happened in the USA in the turn of the 20th Century when particularly the Irish and the Italians immigrated to New York in vast numbers. Reports at the time showed violent outbreaks and racism towards the newcomers. Outside of New York it was hardly mentioned because in those days there was little media to popularise the articles of the time outside of the immediate area. So eventually it settled down and the Irish and Italian communities are now a proud part of the US culture.

Facebook

What we see today though is that 1 billion people globally use the same channel (Facebook) to catch up with news, spread ideas and communicate in real time. Things that normally would go unnoticed or have great difficulty gaining traction can spread like wildfire. The very nature of Facebook is that when something is controversial it creates conversation, which in turn creates more attention and therefore more conversation until soon you’ve got a bad idea that goes viral.

You might have 1000s of people arguing against the idea but the idea spreads anyway because friends see each others comments in their feeds. The fact that many ideas we see are not based on facts, science or anything closely resembling the truth is besides the point. The point is that it will spread anyway and most of the suckers reading it believe it 100%, especially if it comes from a national source like a newspaper.

So called Newspapers

Newspapers like the Daily Mail in the UK understand this. They called out 3 judges recently as being enemies of the people. The judges ruled that the Brexit Article 50 could not be enforced without parliaments backing. To do anything different the judges would have had to reform the law as it has stood for over 100 years. The UK state is a democracy of voted in officials (MPs) that are responsible for these kinds of decisions. It was always known that Brexit was not legally binding.

The Mail though wrote damning indictments on the 3 judges, claiming “Fury over ‘out of touch’ judges who have ‘declared war on democracy’”(whilst quoting 4 actual people) stoking fires of hatred and fear, just like Trump.

The Mail and Trump know what Goering knew, that “All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger”. Many in the UK have seized upon this as symptomatic of their own problems. Hence Brexit. Most of my countrymen in the UK who voted leave say one of 2 things about Brexit.

1) There are too many foreigners scamming our system and this gives us back control.

2) I’m just tired of decades of in-austerity.

Both of those problems are down to the UK government and have very little to do with the EU. That’s my opinion by the way. But my opinion is swayed by not being able to find a single EU law forced upon the UK government without the governments consent. Nor was I able to find any reason that the EU caused the decades of in-austerity my friends talk about. None of my friends in the leave camp have persuaded me with any argument that they’re right. I agree they need change. Just not this change.

The EU was a political card that was played by the conservative ex-Prime Minister David Cameron in a gamble that backfired. It remains to be seen how that will pan out.

Trump & Brexit are symptoms of a wider problem

I started off writing about the Klan supporting Trump and ended up with Brexit. Why? Because the whole point of what I am trying to say is the global communication revolution that’s happened over the last 5 years is what’s impacting every country or state that uses social media. Social media is an amplification platform and controversial things get amplified much more than less controversial things.

You might be asking what has this got to do with Finland? With Quru?

Well this kind of stuff is where I need to draw a line in the sand. I cannot agree with a man whose stance is that someone’s race, sex, or religious affiliation can be used to deny them the freedoms their predecessors have fought hard to preserve in previous generations.

I cannot stomach those that affiliate with him for personal gain.

All those involved with the Trump campaign should be thoroughly and utterly ashamed of themselves as human beings. There is no good reason to vote for Trump. None at all. It just needs to be said. Show me one policy (ONE) where Trump has a better idea than his opponents in the election and I’ll show you why you’re wrong and listening to the hyperbole.

If this article helps persuade one American to vote against Trump I’m happy. Because ignoring Trump and hoping he goes away is as bad as voting for him.

Don’t let history repeat itself. Our grandfathers fought and died so that assholes like Hitler wouldn’t rule over them and you. Don’t let their sacrifices be forgotten.
